"I care about the Grizzly Bears' future because I don't
know anything that means more to me than the integrity of
nature. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the
inspiration we derive from life, all flow from nature in
one way or another."

Waterton Park Front |
 Nestled
in the Canadian Rockies, Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta
is known internationally for its incredible beauty and biological
diversity. Mule Deer, Grizzly and Black Bear, Cougar, Wolf,
Moose and Elk all thrive here, using the park and the aspen
parkland around it to feed and hunt and breed. While the park
is protected, the lands on the northeast corner of the park
- which act as a buffer - are not. The Rockies are narrow
at this point so these animals need more space than what is
protected by the park.
 Ranching
families working the land around Waterton, some of whom have
been there for three generations, live harmoniously with the
wildlife around them, protecting movement corridors for these
animals and helping them survive.
But this beautiful and pristine landscape is under threat
from those who would like to live and play here. There is
pressure to subdivide properties for holiday housing and condominiums.
Land values are rising and, although local ranchers are doing
all they can to protect the open spaces, the task is becoming
almost impossible. The
Nature Conservancy of Canada is working with local landowners
to help them save the land they have cared for so well and
protect the important habitat for all the wild animals that
live here. Working together, we have already protected over
27,000 acres but much more needs to be done. You can help
by becoming a Nature
Conservancy of Canada Protector right now. |
