"Manitoba's tall grass prairie ecosystem is truly
Canada's equivalent of a tropical rainforest. It is
one of the most fascinating, one of the most dynamic natural
plant systems in the world."

Tall Grass Prairie Preserve |
Thousands of years ago, native
Tall Grass Prairie stretched all the way from Manitoba to
Texas. Today, only one half of one percent of this original
prairie remains and, in Canada, up until the late 1980s, it
was thought to have been lost forever. But amateur naturalists
in Manitoba discovered a patch of tall grass prairie and since
1989, the
Nature Conservancy of Canada has been working to save
this globally endangered ecosystem. This is the only place
in Canada where you can find the Western Prairie Fringed Orchid.

The trumpet-like call of the Sandhill Crane can often be heard
across the sea of grass. But what's left of the Tall Grass
Prairie is under increasing threat. The land is being changed
forever and non-native species are rapidly encroaching. The
Nature Conservancy of Canada is taking action right now to
save the last remnants of Manitoba's Tall Grass Prairie forever.
When you become a Protector,
you'll help ensure that the endangered plants and wildlife
of the Tall Grass Prairie have a home. |
